Yang and Yin in the Emotional Life of a Holarchy

Authors: Stephen P. Smith

This paper develops a Yang—Yin model of emotional life within Arthur Koestler’s concept of the holon, treating outward emotional expression and inward reflection as complementary functions of a self-regulating system. Yang represents the movement of feeling into action, communication, creativity, and relationship, while Yin represents the capacity to contain, examine, and integrate feeling before it becomes action. Their relationship is regulated by a homeostatic function that does not seek emotional stillness but maintains a dynamic balance between expression and reflection. The paper examines the characteristic distortions that arise when either pole dominates, including impulsive emotional flooding, projection, and dramatized memory on one side, and suppression, over-intellectualization, and emotional detachment on the other. Because persons are holons embedded within larger holarchies, the same regulatory dynamics can extend through families, communities, and cultures. Emotional maturity is therefore understood not as diminished feeling or permanent calm, but as the capacity for coherent intensity: allowing emotion to remain vital and expressive while retaining sufficient reflection and containment to preserve understanding, relationship, and systemic coherence.
